After
man discovered fire the need was to tame it and to use it not just cook food or
drive wild animals away but also to illuminate our lives.
Standing
as a testimony to this is the history of mankind. Though barely celebrated and
hardly recognized, as the humanity went on slowly with the efforts to bring
light indoor through the use of various materials such as wax, candles and
wooden torches, it was not until the discovery of electricity and of ways and
means to harness its power that the story of development picked up pace.
Not
only it elongated our day and powered the machines that totally revolutionized
our lifestyle it also brought about massive changes and affected us in a way
that after fire and agriculture it, for many, is considered to be the greatest
discovery by the man.
Indeed,
it is difficult to comprehend of modern civilization without electricity. That
thin, barely measuring a few millimeter, copper wire wrapped around in plastic
casing moving the electrically charged electrons has had a profound effect on
us.
However,
given our propensity to take things for granted we hardly spare any thoughts of
the turmoil, the effort and the saga of human conquest that has gone into—from
the time of Benjamin Franklin who first conducted electricity from the flash of
lightning in the thunderous sky to barely visible
micro-processors—harnessing one of nature’s greatest power to illuminate our
lives.
