Diwali and Lakshmi Pooja – All that you should know about Lakshmi Pooja

The country’s biggest and widely celebrated festival – Diwali is around the corner. Often referred as the festival of lights, Diwali marks the tradition of Lakshmi Pooja to bless the house and business with prosperity, wealth and good luck in all the endeavors.
Though the tradition of Lakshmi Pooja continues to grow from our great grand-fathers to our grand-fathers to our father to now us, not a lot of people would know the mythological reasoning behind this auspicious tradition. This is a disturbing and alarming precedent that most of the people, especially from the millennial generation are not aware of the exact mythology or methodology of this tradition. Our elders were correct when they used to say that do not perform a tradition or pooja just for the sake of doing it. To do it properly, it is quintessential to understand the meaning and essence behind it. So, before we move into the dos and don’ts of Lakshmi Pooja, we would like to introduce the reason behind this pooja. Understanding this would make its importance and relevance clear.
As per mythology, Goddess Lakshmi, wife of Lord Vishnu is also the Goddess of Wealth. It is believed that Diwali, which falls on the third day of the festival is the most pious and auspicious day. Every year, on this day, Goddess Lakshmi makes a visit to her devotees and bless them with fortune, wealth as well as prosperity.
Another thing that is associated with Goddess Lakshmi is that she resides in a place where righteousness, honesty, compassion and cleanliness prevail. In fact, cleanliness is very important aspect to Goddess Lakshmi visit and that is why she gives her blessings only in a clean house. That is the reason many people whitewash their homes and do a top to bottom home cleaning on Diwali. Helpguru provides reliable and quality services at a special Diwali offer.  We should be careful about few things while doing Lakshmi Pooja on Diwali. There are some dos and don’ts. Let’s have a look at that.
Dos for Lakshmi Pooja on Diwali:
  • Laksmi Pooja should be done in the evening at the right time. This year the pradosh kaal muhurta for the pooja is from 19:11 to 20:16.
  • The main diya for the pooja must be filled with Ghee. Rest of the diyas can be filled with mustard oil.
  • The pooja place must be placed in the north-east direction. All the family members should sit facing the north direction while doing the Lakshmi Pooja.
  • Make most use of red colour. It can be used in diyas, bedsheets, flowers, candles and lights.
  • Start Diwali Pooja by worshipping ‘Vighnaharta’ Lord Ganesha.
  • If you maintain account books, you should worship those as well.
  • Lotus flower is the favourite with Goddess Lakshmi and hence should be included in the pooja.
Don’ts for Lakshmi Pooja on Diwali:
  • While choosing gifts for family or friends, don’t choose leather, crackers and cutlery items. If you must for some reason, try to add some sweets along with it.
  • Avoid gambling on the auspicious day of Diwali. You can play cards for fun, but not for money.
  • Pooja place should not be left unattended. This is to make sure that the main diya remains lit.
  • Instead of using too many candles, try using diyas.
  • Try not to use that idol of Lord Ganesha which is not in the sitting position or the one with right-sided trunk.
  • Do not light crackers while doing Lakshmi Pooja.
  • Avoid drinking and non-vegetarian food on Diwali.
Diwali is a festival that symbolizes the victory of good over evil. The lights that we illuminate in our homes also illuminate our hearts and lives and let us live a righteous and moral life. The light makes us travel from darkness to brightness by doing good deeds like helping poor and needy people. Through our principled and correct actions, it takes us closer to divinity.
We wish this Diwali brings us closer to each other through the virtues of love, brotherhood and humanity. Happy Diwali to all of you from Helpguru! 😊
